Warenhaus (Department Store) documents the transformation of shopping malls into Urban Entertainment Centers, where recreational activities are increasingly partnered with the acquisition of consumer goods. This is illustrated in several performance islands. The actual goods have become extras, isolated and displayed on pedestals.
For six weeks an actor occupies the performance islands, presenting various scenarios typical of the recreational activities in a shopping center (mayor’s inauguration speech, guided tour of a stamp collection, autograph signings, fashion show, children’s play center, movie). Warenhaus thus offers the public a theatrical Gesamtkunstwerk.
